Fah Fee: The Kasi Lotto
South Africa, 2009, 11min
Director: Pamela Sebigi

The game of Fah- Fee, introduced by the Chinese in the early 1900s, has woven itself into the rich tapestry of South African township culture.

This short documentary explores the “township-lottery”; a life-line for many of the country’s most destitute.

God Loves Sinners
South Africa, 2009, 22min
Director: Nami Mhlongo

Difficulties faced by black gays in South Africa are told through an intimate portrait of a lesbian couple. The lovers face not only rejection from their families, but also a real threat of violence as hate crimes against homosexuals mount in Gauteng townships.

Madala Hostel
South Africa, 2009, 12min
Director: Sibusiso Mngomezulu

This short explores living conditions in Alexandra Township’s infamous Madala Hostel originally designed to accommodate a migrant workforce.

The now dilapidated hostel is home to hundreds of men, women and children, who despite numerous pleas to local officials are still forced to to accept sub-standard living conditions.

Soul Train
South Africa, 2009, 14min
Director: Thabo “Bruno” Mokoena

Every morning thousands of township residents board the Metrorail to Johannesburg. Train carriages transform into makeshift places of worship where charismatic Christian evangelists preach from the bible whilst traditionalists denounce the corrupting force of foreign gods.

Spiderman and Romeo
South Africa, 2009, 9min
Director: Sifiso Khanyile

Train-surfing, an increasingly popular and potentially fatal “extreme sport”, is explored in this short. Romeo, a one time train-surfer, became a Metrorail official after a friend was killed whilst surfing. He is determined to protect young daredevils from the same fate. Spiderman is an avid surfer whose death defying antics betray no sign of fear.
